The causes of acne

Causes of acne

Acne is caused by problems with the skin's oil glands (also known as sebatious glands).

The sebatious glands open into canals (follicles) under the skin's surface at the roots of the body's hair.

The sebatious glands secrete sebum, an oily substance who's main function is to lubricate the skin, stopping it from drying out - keeping the moisture in. This helps to keep skin free from dryness and irritation.

The sebum passes into the follicle around the hair and gets onto the skin’s surface through the small hole located in the surface of the skin - known as a pore.

When or if dead skin cells stick together and seal or cap the pore it can cause acne. This is because the sebatious glands continue to secrete sebum, so the blocked or capped pore starts to swell because the sebum has nowhere to go.

Some of the bacteria that occur naturally on the skin and live on sebum are trapped inside the blocked pore- these bacteria are from the acne family - hence the name acne.

These bacteria multiply in this protected environment and secrete chemicals that eat away at the walls of the pore. Instead of seeping out onto the surface of the skin, the sebum seeps out into the lower levels of the skin and spreads the infection further.

The bodies immune system reacts to this apparant infection and sends white blood cells to fight the infection, which results in further swelling, redness and pain.

The pore and nearby infected areas will keep swelling and expand upwards and outwards, until they can be seen on the surface of the skin - and lo and behold, a spot or zit appears.

Before th spot bursts, the sebum remains a creamy white colour and is known as a whitehead. Once the cap of the zit explodes, the sebum turns black, forming a blackhead.

If this infection spreads, causing many of these ‘spots’ link up, you get what are known as lesions. This word "lesion" is derived from the Latin 'laesio' meaning attack or injury.

You usually get acne around the face or neck although it can occur anywhere on the body. Teen acne is especially prevalent and is a very upsetting condition to have, especially when suffering from a bad attack.

The sight of spots and blackheads is not considered very pleasant and can leave those who suffer feeling very self conscious and embarrassed. The irony is that almost everyone suffers with acne to some degree during their life, so far from being the exception, acne is in fact, the rule.

If you do have acne, it will eventually go away. However, you can usually minimise or eradicate acne within weeks once you have found a treatment that works for you. One effective treatement can be found at www.acnefreein3days.com
